چکیده

Hydrogenated tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C:H) is advantageous as coating material for high-density magnetic and optical storage devices, due to its favorable combination of density and smoothness. An advantage of ta-C:H over tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) is the absence of macroparticles, often found in cathodic arc deposition of ta-C, and the hydrogen rich surface, compatible with the lubricant. As for taC, in order to increase the magnetic storage density, the ta-C:H thickness needs to be decreased. It is thus necessary to determine the minimum thickness for continuous and pin-hole free films. Here we investigate the roughness evolution of ta-C:H by atomic force microscopy and determine the roughness and growth exponents a and b. We find a very similar behaviour to ta-C, with the ta-C:H roughness slightly higher than the ta-C one for any given thickness. This confirms the smoothing effect of impinging ions during ta-C:H deposition. D 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Dynamic roughening of tetrahedral amorphous carbon.

The roughness of tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) films grown at room temperature is measured as a function of film thickness by atomic force microscopy, to extract roughness and growth exponents of alpha approximately 0.39 and beta approximately 0-0.1, respectively. This extremely small growth exponent shows that some form of surface diffusion and relaxation operates at a homologous tempera...

Surface properties of ultra-thin tetrahedral amorphous carbon films for magnetic storage technology

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films form a critical protective layer on magnetic hard disks and their reading heads. Film thickness below 2 nm and roughness well below 1 nm are needed for storage density of 200 Gbityinch . We use atomic force 2 microscopy to study the roughness evolution vs. thickness of highly sp hydrogen-free tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C). The 3 roughness of films r general...

High rate deposition of ta-C:H using an electron cyclotron wave resonance plasma source

A compact electron cyclotron wave resonance (ECWR) source has been developed for the high rate deposition of hydrogenated tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C:H). The ECWR provides growth rates of up to 1.5 nm/s over a 4-inch diameter and an independent control of the deposition rate and ion energy. The ta-C:H was deposited using acetylene as the source gas and was characterized as having an sp c...

Elastic constants of tetrahedral amorphous carbon films by surface Brillouin scattering

The elastic constants of tetrahedral amorphous carbon ~ta-C! and hydrogenated tetrahedral amorphous carbon ~ta-C:H! thin films were determined nondestructively by surface Brillouin scattering. Besides the usual Rayleigh surface mode, we also observe a new pseudosurface acoustic mode of longitudinal polarization, which is a modified version of the longitudinal guided mode usually found in slow-o...

MAGNETISATION AND ELECTRON SPIN RESONANCE STUDIES OF TETRAHEDRAL AMORPHOUS CARBON

The magnetisation and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrum of two specimens of tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C), deposited from a filtered cathodic arc, were measured over a wide temperature range. The magnetisation was found to consist of superparamagnetic, paramagnetic and diamagnetic contributions. The superparamagnetic contribution resembled that recently found in carbon prepared from ...
